Educational Philosophy

I believe that every child has the potential to excel and shine. I ensure my students have a nurturing, comfortable and conducive learning environment every time they attend my class. Students today juggle various commitments that compete for their attention and time. I believe that every child should be taught a variety of academic skills and techniques that would maximise their learning. Besides studying hard, every student should STUDY SMART, and LEARN MORE. We strive to make every minute count during the lesson, so that classroom time is gainfully spent.

As an English Language teacher, my forte lies in my ability to enthuse my students in a subject that is generally considered “dry”. Moreover, I find that my training as a GEP teacher has equipped me with a repertoire of pedagogical techniques to teach students of varying abilities and temperaments, from primary to the college levels. My genuine interest in interacting with youths, coupled with my sensitivity towards students’ learning styles, helps me design and conduct lessons that can stimulate their interest. For example, I may conduct vocabulary or grammar lessons through interactive word games, group discussions or even music. I also try to engage my students in focused discussions using relevant videos, honing their speaking and listening skills at the same time. I believe English Language and the Humanities have to be taught in context and not just through mundane drills and practices. As such, I pivot my lessons around a range of themes that touch on various social, political and cultural issues of the day. Using these themes as backdrops I then launch into the teaching of grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and essay-writing skills. Through these approaches, I hope to teach in a manner that is both relevant and interesting to a young person, where academic skills are not learnt in isolation. At the same time, through the critical analysis of current affairs, I hope to engage our youths in a discourse that would inculcate in them proper values, greater social awareness, and civic consciousness.

I impart to my students not just academic knowledge but life lessons and values that I have gleaned through my life experiences. It is my hope that every child that I am privileged to meet and teach, is inspired and enriched, blessed and prospered, in all ways.

Yours in Education,

Ms. Foo Ee June
